Injection Molding Equipment Manufacturer BOY Takes Viscosity Improved Hydraulic Fluid to the Test – and Realizes Substantial Savings!

BOY injection molding machines already set the benchmark when it comes to energy efficiency. However, BOY engineers are always on the lookout for additional savings potential. The hydraulic fluids they normally use in their injection molding machines fulfill all demands with respect to usability and functionality. The potential and the advantages of a “tailor-made” hydraulic fluid was never taken to the test before. The BOY team was eager to grab the opportunity the DYNAVIS® Efficiency Test Team offered to them.

One Machine. Two Fluids. Two Cycles. Three Temperature Levels.

The test machine was a BOY 35 E with a clamping force of 350 kN. 
It was tested two times —with and without the EconPlast equipment package. Test cycles were designed according to Euromap 60.1. 

Monitored and recorded were energy consumption of the main drive system pressures pressure at the suction and pressure side of the hydro motor and the injection unit the pump rotation speed of the BOY HE 32.

Test cycles were performed at three oil temperature levels, 30 °C, 35 °C and 44 °C. At first, commercially available fluids formulated with the DYNAVIS® technology were used. In the final run, a tailor-made fluid especially developed by the Evonik engineers for BOY, named “BOY HE32”, was used. This fluid was compared to a conventional hydraulic fluid with a viscosity of 46 mm²/s at 40 °C.



The Result – Significant Energy Savings

Energy consumption of the drive dropped by up to 10 %. Even the smallest savings effect amounted to 7 %. The DYNAVIS® fluid reduced the amount of energy consumption at all temperatures. 

The Tailor-Made Fluid Allowed Operation Over a Wider Temperature Range 

The fluid formulated with the DYNAVIS® technology required less cooling and temperature was easier to control even at lower temperature levels. The effect was observed via extended operating intervals of the coolant circulation pump. The additional savings and reduced energy consumption for oil cooling are not yet quantified and considered in our benefit calculator.
